Toyota privacy notice update (Oct 28, 2026): personal data used to train large language models, Acxiom tracking
Toyota's Oct 28 privacy notices add "training large language models" as a use of personal data, including connected-car data, plus Acxiom cross-device tracking and AI in customer support.
The wording
What changed
Toyota Motor North America updated two US privacy notices on October 28, 2026: the general Toyota Privacy Notice that covers toyota.com, the Toyota app, call-center contacts and dealer-related records, and the Toyota Connected Services Privacy Notice that covers data sent from connected vehicles. Both now carry the date "Updated as of: October 28, 2026." We compared the general notice with the July 1, 2026 version recorded by Open Terms Archive, and the Connected Services notice with the July 1, 2026 PDF that is still posted on toyota.com. Toyota published the changes without a summary.
Change 1: training large language models is now a listed use of your personal information. In the July version of the general notice, large language models came up only in the definition of "Research Data," which Toyota described as data "related to Toyota’s consumer and product research," such as "your responses to surveys, insights generated from simulated user profiles, and information you provide as part of a focus group." The October 28 version adds a separate line to section 3, "How We Use The Personal Information We Collect": "For the purpose of training large language models." That list covers the personal information Toyota collects "about and from you," which the notice says includes contact details, vehicle ownership and service records, website and app activity, and "call center records and screen, audio and/or video recordings."
Change 2: the connected-car notice says it outright. The July Connected Services notice already listed "Artificial intelligence research (activities may include training, fine-tuning, or improving large-language models; developing other kinds of artificial intelligence models or systems; and building virtual agents)" among the uses of Location Data, Driving Data, Vehicle Health Data, Voice Recordings, Exterior Image Data, Account Information and other vehicle data. The October version adds: "We collect and use personal information for the purpose of training large language models." The list of vehicle data covered by that section didn't change. Neither notice describes a separate way to opt out of AI or language-model use.
Change 3: Acxiom tracking across devices. The general notice already named Google Analytics and LiveRamp cookies. It now adds: "We also use cookies, tags, and similar tracking technologies, including those provided by Acxiom, to recognize visitors across different devices and browsers and to match browsing activity to broader audience profiles." It links Acxiom's opt-out page.
Change 4: AI in customer support and service messages. Customer support now includes "our use of third-party artificial intelligence models and/or other generative artificial intelligence technologies for customer support." In the Connected Services notice, the section on vehicle health reports, maintenance alerts and service-related marketing adds: "We may use third-party artificial intelligence models and/or other generative artificial intelligence technologies for these communications."
Other changes: Woven by Toyota and Toyota Research Institute are added to the affiliates Toyota receives information from and discloses it to. "Battery charge data" and "electricity consumed for charging" are added as examples of product data. In the Connected Services notice, the data sent to regulators now includes "battery energy data," going to "state and federal regulatory authorities," where July said "state regulators." The section on profiling and automated decision-making drops the line that, because Toyota doesn't make such decisions, "there is no need to provide a right to opt out." Connecticut residents are added to those who can ask for a list of specific third parties that received their data, and a Rhode Island list of third parties to whom Toyota "sell[s], or may sell" personal information is linked. The California "Shine the Light" section now points to the opt-out form at privacy.toyota.com.
What stays the same: the Connected Services notice still says Toyota won't share Connected Services Data with "Data resellers," "Social networks," "Ad networks" or "Insurance Providers, unless we have your consent or as required by law." You can still opt out of Connected Services or ask Toyota to deactivate data transmission.
Lexus: the Lexus Privacy Notice, updated October 14, 2026, has the same line, "For the purpose of training large language models." We didn't have an earlier Lexus copy to compare against.
Coverage (checked Oct 31, 2026): web, news and X searches found no reporting on either Toyota update. Open Terms Archive logged the change to the general notice on October 29.
Who it affects
Toyota owners and lessees in the US, people who use the Toyota app or Connected Services, anyone who has called, chatted with or emailed Toyota, and visitors to toyota.com. Lexus owners are covered by a separate Lexus notice that has the same language-model line.
Quick answers
Does Toyota use my data to train AI?
Toyota's US privacy notices say so. Since October 28, 2026, the Toyota Privacy Notice lists "For the purpose of training large language models" among the uses of personal information, and the Connected Services Privacy Notice says "We collect and use personal information for the purpose of training large language models."
Which car data is covered?
The Connected Services notice lists the uses, including artificial intelligence research and language-model training, for Location Data, Driving Data, Vehicle Health Data, Vehicle Information, Remote Data, Profile Data, Exterior Image Data, Multimedia Screen Data, Voice Recordings, Voice Services, Device Data, Account Information, and data from Safety Connect, navigation, Remote Connect, Service Connect and Wi-Fi.
Was this already in Toyota's privacy notice?
Partly. The July 1, 2026 versions already mentioned large language models: the general notice under "Research Data" (surveys, focus groups, simulated profiles), and the Connected Services notice under "Artificial intelligence research." The October 28 versions add language-model training as a separate stated purpose.
Can I opt out of Toyota using my data for AI?
Neither notice describes a separate AI opt-out. You can submit privacy requests (including to opt out of sale or sharing, or to delete data) at privacy.toyota.com or 855-226-4048, and you can opt out of Connected Services or request deactivation of data transmission with the SOS button, Customer Care, or the Toyota app.
What is Acxiom doing on Toyota's website?
The notice says Toyota uses tracking technologies "including those provided by Acxiom, to recognize visitors across different devices and browsers and to match browsing activity to broader audience profiles." Acxiom's opt-out is at isapps.acxiom.com/optout.
